I'm Kelly Murray and am the Proprietor and Registered Manager of Quality Care @ Home.I have 4 Children, 4 Grandsons and live in Hereford.
Background:
I have been studying/working in Health and Social Care on and off since leaving school in 1994. I have worked in varied roles too. From working in the laundry to being Night Shift Manager in an EMI unit. After much thought, training and hard work, Quality Care @ Home was established in January 2013. My reasons for starting my own homecare service was that I had my own idea of how homecare should be delivered and here we are almost 10 years later. Delivering an average of 1300+ hours of personalised care per week with approx. 55 employees.
My first experience:
My first experience of working with others was in the good old days. I'd stay with my Auntie Vera in Kent for a few weeks of the summer holidays and she worked in a residential home for the elderly. I must have been about 8 years old! You couldn't do that now as much as my Grandson would love it!
My Mission:
My mission has always been to enrich the lives of others! Whether it be a service user or work colleague. I am driven by improving our service users choices, independence and quality of life. Having experienced a variety of services in the sector, it was important for me to identify the areas where individuals or their support network needed help- No one should be struggling. There is help for everyone, it's just knowing how to get that help.
I also pride myself in being a fair employer and support system to my work colleagues. I enjoy working in an open office ethic where we can be transparent and share our love of helping people- there is also a lot of teasing that goes on, it's not all serious! I work with the best team.. ever! None of this would be possible without them.
My hopes and dreams:
If I win the lottery, I want to build a Dementia Village based in the 60's and 70's.
My more realistic hopes and dreams ... To continue doing what I do... instilling the importance of homecare services and its support workers into the community. We (the social care system) are the back bone of community services.
My name is Skye Smith, I am the HR and Training Manager. I am a Mum to 3 beautiful boys.
A bit about me:
I applied to work at Quality Care @ Home on my 18th birthday, I started in the office, auditing the paperwork and assisting with End of Life service users. My first venture in to the community was after unexpected sickness, I then decided to become a full time support worker. I became Senior Support worker at 19 and Care Coordinator at 21. 2 Years ago I qualified to train and began my journey with the HR and Training Manager role.
Background:
I have achieved all of my adult milestone whilst working with Quality Care @ Home; I passed my driving test, first home, had two of my three boys and got married. I started my Level 2 Health and Social care 6 months after starting with Quality Care @ Home and then went straight on to complete my Level 3. I completed Level 2 courses for: Dementia Care, Safe Handling of medication, Care and Management of Diabetes, End of Life care, Dignity and Safeguarding and Awareness of Mental health problems. In 2020, I completed my Level 5 in Health and Social Care – this is one of my proudest achievements.
My first experience:
I had no experience in Domiciliary care prior to starting with Quality Care @ Home, one of my first experiences I remember like it was yesterday, I was doing a visit with one of our service users, put my phone and the house keys on the side and completed the call, when I was getting ready to leave I picked up my phone but I could not find the key…. ANYWHERE. I asked the service user repeatedly if she seen where I’d put it, “no love – it must be here somewhere!” after 20 minutes of looking for the key I began panicking and called Kelly, Kelly then asked me to go and ask the service user again, so I did, I said Kelly was on the phone and are you sure you didn’t see where I put it? She burst in the laughter and pulled the key out of her cardigan pocket, I was shocked! Apparently this is a trick she played on all of her new support workers... 8 years on and I STILL always put the key back in the key safe before entering a service user’s property!
My mission:
Since becoming the HR & Training Manager, I enjoy supporting people achieve their own goals and qualifications. I currently hold a study session twice a week where staff can come in and complete their Online Training, Care Certificates and NVQ’s.
My hopes and dreams:
I would love to develop a “workshop” for Dementia care, teaching support workers and family members how to support people with Dementia, the importance of routine and how to identify and avoid triggers. I believe that families should have more support in understanding the Disease and how their Dementia will influence their behaviours, personality and their memory.
My dream is to one day open a day care centre / dementia Café, a safe space for families find comfort in one another. Before COVID I used to take a service user to “singing for the brain” weekly and seeing them socialise and sing their childhood songs was always my favourite day of the week!
